Owen on the left here, has removed the buttresses from this oak and is in the process of putting the felling cut in.
The apprentices know which trees to fell because they have been marked with a paint spot.
They will have learn to fell accurately, this is quite a congested woodland, and there isn’t much room for error- unless you want to spend the day winching the trees out!
It is a time consuming process, but ultimately, accuracy and quality of product are the important things here. If the product is of poor quality, the landowner may well stop us from working on their land, so we have to ensure that the emphasis is on product value, as well as practicing our felling techniques for the assessment.
At the end of the week Owen and Will took their certificate of competence assessment and passed with flying colours, and Dan completed his cross cutting certificate, Congratulations to them!!
